Erika Lust is changing the way we view porn and the way women are viewed in porn. Growing up in the sexually-liberal country, Sweden where sex is openly discussed, created sex-positive view for Erika. Her interest in erotica was sparked at an early age while viewing porn for the very first time at a girlfriend’s sleepover. After a few minutes of watching, Erika felt disenchanted by the lack of imagination, story line and unrealistic characters. The let-down happened again while studying Political Science at the University of Lund, where she watched porn with her then-boyfriend. This film has a similar effect, and Erika gave up on watching porn again.

Liberator Unzipped: Talks PornErika explains the reason for not enjoying her initial experiences with porn is because she did not identify with anything on the screen. Her Eureka moment was with a book by Berkeley Professor Linda Williams called Hardcore. She discovered that porn has the ability to not only inspire lust, but also to educate and allow women to explore their sexuality—to embrace it, enjoy it, and to demand the right to sexual pleasure. She felt there was a complete imbalance and lack of female voice in mainstream porn. Her mission: create porn that represents female values, kinks and pleasures using performers that can portray roles we can relate to.

Her first film, The Good Girl, was distributed free via the internet and downloaded over 2 million times. The huge response not only surprised Erika, but it inspired her to create a porn production company, Erika Lust Films. She never imagined that she would end up being a writer, producer and director of erotic films. The secret to her success is that she turns ideas and fantasy’s into something real, into something where the viewer can get aroused by the details, situations and scenarios. Since then, Erika Lust produced a number of award-winning films like Cabaret Desires, and her series entitled XConfessions.

XConfessions is a project that combines Erika’s style of adult filmmaking with the public’s own sex stories and fantasies. Users submit anonymous posts at www.xconfessions.com, and each month Erika picks her favorites to turn into explicit shorts films. With XConfessions, Erika has created a new way of seeing and understanding eroticism, where men and women share equal roles. With titillating titles like I Love Fucking Ikea and I Pegged My Boyfriend, it’s no wonder she has sold millions of copies.

When asked her about her relationship with the mainstream porn industry she claims that she is just creating an alternative—a new way to express sexuality.

“Nowadays every teenager can surf the web and have access to a lot of sexually explicit contents. These contents, mostly created by men, will influence them with their ideas on feminine and masculine roles in sexuality. They’ll make them believe that women are only sexually attractive when assuming certain roles. Roles that constrain girls and women, my own children included, girls who will be the women of tomorrow”.
