Civilizations and cultures have been using human form as canvas since the beginning of time. Certain tribes still use this artful expression to determine hierarchy or to attract a potential mate. The beauty is using the body as art helps many of these cultures to tell their story and to remain connected to the present. Incredibly, artists like Trina Merry are taking body painting to a whole new and unbelievable level. From environmental, to sculptural—this art form has taken off and now has a new reality show called “Skin Wars” all dedicated to this spectacular art form.

Trina Merry creates unique body art for projects that range from avant-garde to commercial ad campaigns. It allows her to create a special connection to a person allowing for a truly immersive human experience. Merry explains, “I am inspired by the bodies themselves—by what they can and cannot do.” By incorporating the painted body into a physical landscape, Merry is blurring the lines between viewer and subject.

For Trina Merry, she finds the human body the most interesting surface to work with. Not without it’s difficulties (i.e. breathing, temperature, and constant breaks) the body is an immediately accessible surface which forces her to do the absolute best. By working intensively, she is able to create something transformational, unpredictable, evolutionary, and incredibly real.
