One must wonder what really goes on in the mind of an artist sometimes. Take for instance, Swiss artist Till Rabus. A master at creating photoreal unreality, he is one of just a handful of photorealists that has a keen eye for arranging the most thought-provoking compositions.

From a distance, each work of art resembles a slick photograph, but upon closer inspection, the illusion begins to slowly dissipate to reveal the classic medium of oil on canvas.  The result of this meticulous process is a flat surface in which three-dimensional figures comes alive.

Rabus’ carnal concoctions get as close to representation as technically possible within this medium. His entire composition is carefully blended with highlights, shadows, and flesh tones to create a sensational textured, almost wet like surface which emulates a series of tangled limbs. Although his realism is unmistakable, it is the placement that makes it virtually unbelievable.

How the mind of an artist really works will always remain a mystery. But one thing is for certain, it takes an extraordinary imagination to make the impossible world of sexual fantasy come to life. Rabus is skilled at combining erotism and surrealism without appearing vulgar. His anthropomorphic, surreal scenarios are sexually charged but don’t necessarily reveal the entire story. That is the genius with his work—the observer gets to decide their own personal meaning.

The clash between hyper-realistic style and symbolic, surreal content is what makes this stunning work so eye-catching. There is an unexpected symmetry and palette of complementary colors which induces a sense of order in an otherwise chaotic world of fantasy. What Rabus does accomplish is something complex—the disorientation of the familiar and chance for a second look as figures come alive.
