Any psychotherapist would love a peek into the minds of artists Petra Mrzyk & Jean-François Moriceau. Better known as Mrzyk & Moriceau, the eccentric dynamic duo are famous for their risqué, offbeat illustrations. They’ve built a massive portfolio containing a heavy dose of pop erotica, all produced—together as one—out of their quaint French studio.

According to Mrzyk & Moriceau, and contrary to what a lot of the critics say, everything is black and white. Positive and negative, darkness and light—these are the oppositions Mrzyk & Moriceau negotiate to make great images. The ability to distill gut feelings and visceral reactions down to the purest graphic expression is what makes some artists good, and others great. But these are the elements which make Mrzyk & Moriceau unforgettable.

Their surreal, sometimes kaleidoscopic, images play with body parts, black humor and innuendo, toeing the line between dreamlike and lustful—in only a way the French seem to cultivate. Using the bare bones of illustration, their almost exclusively black and white line drawings are no less stirring in their simplicity, and between them, they’ve built something of a cult following for their music video animations.

Petra Mrzyk a.k.a “Mrzyk” was born in 1973 in Nuremberg, and Jean-François Moriceau a.k.a “Moriceau” was born in 1974 in Saint-Nazaire. After meeting in art school, the pair decided to chart an erotic journey together. A recent article in Juxtapoz Magazine describes their art “as cheeky and better than antidepressants.” For these illustrators, they are one in the same—unable to achieve greatness without the other—much like ying & yang. According to Juxtapoz, Mrzyk & Moriceau “make love to the walls and each other while creating their stunning images.”

By all appearances, one artist is the perfectionist, while the other is a pragmatist, and that’s the magic in creating these perfectly balanced images. Sharp and incisive, Mrzyk & Moriceau outline their drawings with the shapes of humans, animals, and sometimes, strange combinations of both— often without background or scenery, sometimes just very simple and sometimes compositions filled with high contrast—but always with wild imagination. What a wonderful world these two artists inhabit.
